Where Are You Going free essay sample
In this 1966 short story written by Joyce Carol Oates, fifteen-year-old Connie is a self-absorbed teenager who spends her time fantasizing about romance and searching for attention from men. While out with a suitor, a strange man promises her, Im gonna get you, baby (2). Connie doesnt think much of the incident until one day while alone at home; the man comes to ââ¬Å"getâ⬠her. The assailant, Arnold Friend, is kind at first then progressively becomes aggressive and violent towards her. Though at first she enjoys Arnoldââ¬â¢s attention, once his demands become sexual and violent, her confidence diminishes. While Connie attempts to evade Arnoldââ¬â¢s commands, she becomes powerless against the man and eventually follows him to ââ¬Å"go for a rideâ⬠(3). While ââ¬Å"Where are you going, Where have you been,â⬠appears to simply be a tragic story about the abduction and rape of a young girl, it is more importantly a statement of the time on the over-sexualization in the media. We will write a custom essay sample on Where Are You Going or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page From the time period the story was written, the 1960ââ¬â¢s, we know that society as a whole was exploding with counter-culture and rebellion. In response to the Vietnam War, for the first time in history, music rapidly became highly influential and that of a sexual nature. This first wave of over-sexualized media is what influenced Connie and millions of the time to exploit their sexuality. The youth of the time period are commonly thought of as being extremely responsive to the world around them. With music being more suggestive than in the past and young people being more expressive and experimental, Connie grew up in a drastically changing world complete with the need to be sexual and to really stand out in order to be noticed. Media became more widespread and important in the 60ââ¬â¢s than it had ever been before. When the TV and radio werenââ¬â¢t focusing on the war efforts in Vietnam, they showed the youthââ¬â¢s protest, and push to ââ¬Å"Make Love, Not War:â⬠an iconic phrase that illustrates the push towards sexuality during that time. Connie, an adolescent of this explosive period, is a prime example of sexualization in the media having a detrimental effect on a person. It is her need to be desired that makes her appealing to Arnold Friend, and leads to her demise later in the story. Music is a major theme in the story: Connie constantly listens to music and associates music with pleasure in multiple instances. At one point, she even says she ââ¬Å"listened to the music that made everything so goodâ⬠(2). Upon Arnoldââ¬â¢s arrival we see that he is listening to the same music as Connie, which serves as a way to connect them. Since music plays such a prevalent role in Connieââ¬â¢s life, we can conclude that music is the media that influences her to behave in a sexual manner. From the music that she listens to, Bobby King, we get the impression that she links her idea of romance (that derives from the music she listens to) to the confidence and maturity she pretends to have when it comes to boys. Music plays in every situation where she intends to be sexually desired; while out with boys, out with her friend searching for attention, while laying out in her backyard, and even at the beginning of her conversation with Arnold. Music and Connieââ¬â¢s sexuality are inextricable tied togetheronce Connie becomes frightened of Arnold and is no longer exploiting her sexuality, there is no further mention of music in the story. While it is understood that Arnold will most likely harm Connie, he also is whisking her away (or saving her) from a morally loose societythat very same society that made her the over-sexualized girl we see in the beginning of the story. Everything about Connie indicates that she has been socialized into how the media thinks a young girl should befrom her suggestive clothing to her desperate attempt to be sexually desirable to the male population. Despite what she leads on, Connie is actually sexually innocent. Her innocence is echoed by her child-like naivety of opening her front door to a complete stranger while alone, as well as the fear that consumes her while she could have been calling the police to prevent her murder. Arnoldââ¬â¢s desire for the young Connie may be Oatesââ¬â¢ way of portraying how perverse the mediaââ¬â¢s ploy to sexualize Americaââ¬â¢s youth is as well. The ââ¬Å"Lolita Effectâ⬠is even a relatively recent concept. A ââ¬Å"lolitaâ⬠is a young girl who is viewed in a sexual manner, while the ââ¬Å"lolita effectâ⬠is not only the corruption of a child by an adult, but exploiting an adult by a child that has been corrupted by society. Connie exploits her sexuality so well in the beginning of the story. It is her sexualization at such a young age that causes Arnold to find her attractive and is the real life tragedy that comes from the story. By the end of the story, as the title suggests, Connie undergoes a major change. She ties to be an adult, but when Arnold challenges her with sexual advances, we see the frightened child she is. Arnold is merely an agent to portray the evils that exist in the media. He illuminates the fact that our cultureââ¬â¢s media gives young girls the unattainable idea that they must behave in a certain way in order to be attractive, and that a man finding them sexually attractive is of upmost importance even as a pre-teen. The sexualization of young girls causes adult men to be attracted to them, creating an even further over-sexualized society. A young girlââ¬â¢s sexuality is such a vital aspect of the maturation process: a process that is malfunctioning or happening far too soon because of the media. It is the evil in the media that causes Connie to fall victim to the mediaââ¬â¢s harmful portrayal of femininity. Media teaches us that being a typical young woman in todayââ¬â¢s society is contingent on the amount of sexuality her appearance exudes. Connie so perfectly replicates how young girls in America that are being over-sexualized through music or television without even being aware of it. The tragic way that Connie is stripped of her childhood suggests that ââ¬Å"where you are going,â⬠is dependent on where you have been. In ââ¬Å"Where are you going, Where have you been? â⬠Oatesââ¬â¢ does a terrific job of hyperbolizing the affects of the mediaââ¬â¢s influence while pointing out the very unexaggerated truth that over-sexualization in the media is detrimental to all aspects of society.

Contributing Factors of The American Revolution essays
Contributing Factors of The American Revolution essays The factors which contributed towards the American rebellion in 1776 which ultimately led to the American Revolution and independence, can be ordered from the relatively most important, to the relatively not so important. The most important contributing factor was the restrictions of the colonists civil liberties by the British. Less important was the taxation implemented by the British Parliament. Lower still was the British military measures that the British took in order to try and suppress the American patriots. And the least important factor was the legacy of colonial religious and political ideas. The most important factor contributing to the American rebellion in 1776 was the restrictions of the colonists civil liberties by the British. Unlike all other factors this alone took away the colonists freedoms. By seizing our inalienable rights (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness) the British made us rebel. The British were not only taking our governments money through the navigation acts enforced in 1763, but they began to take our jobs, homes and food as well. The quartering act of 1765 stated that colonists had to provide shelter, food and supplies to British troops. The sanctity of the colonists homes was violated. In certain cases these British soldiers would steal everything from the colonists houses. Possibly the worst violations of civil liberties came with the Intolerable Acts of 1774. The acts took away the government of Boston, and took away the rights of the people from Boston. One of these rights was trial by jury. Worse still, if a British soldier killed a colonist , he wouldnt have trial in America, but he would be sent back to Britain where his chances of vindication were better. As the Declaration of Independence says, ... Endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness... that whenever any governmen...

Externalities of Education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Externalities of Education - Essay Example Public Education and Decreasing Unemployment Levels: Rising levels of public education decrease unemployment levels so public education proves to be a positive externality. In developed countries where higher education is being more public, the level of unemployment further decreases. Moreover, in countries where technical education becomes more public this rate goes further down. When professional and skilled learning becomes public, it also increases the labor mobility rate and labor starts moving towards better occupation from traditional to more professional. Public Education Raises Living Standards: Public education is a positive externality as it raises the living standards of people. With the increase in technical and skillful education at public level, people start getting awareness about modern technology and pave their ways towards better living. Public education offers more chances towards advancement and development especially for common man. Comparatively, it is cheap than private education so more people have opportunity to achieve the benefits. Public education is readily available which also makes common man to reap the full benefits from this system of education. Public Education and the Level of Awareness among People: As already mentioned, public education can be readily available so with the help of this education system more and more people can get awareness about common issues regarding health and fitness, balanced diet, pollution etc. So, again we can easily say that public education is a positive externality because of its social benefits. When we analyze the existence of public K-12 school systems versus Private K-12 Schooling system, we can examine various points pro and against the existence of these two. It is important to understand that both the systems have their own advantages as well as drawbacks. Most of the

Electricity Generation Using a Wind Turbine Essay Example for Free
Electricity Generation Using a Wind Turbine Essay Wind turbines are machines built for generation of electricity. The electric power is generated by harnessing the wind speed to drive the shaft that connects to the gears assembled to amplify the amount of energy produced. Aside from wind power, other forces, like gravity and thermal energy, also affect the rotation of the blades, which in turn affect the electricity generation process. This research is aimed at creating a simple wind turbine that is capable of generating electricity. The process will be explained using the principles found in physics such as the law of gravity, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and momentum. Materials and Method The wind turbine setup was created using these devices: hub, three fan blades, metal box, two sets of gears, copper wire, a permanent magnet and volt meter, two rods of different sizes and couple heat sinks. These devices were then assembled to a working wind turbine. First, the blades were attached at an angle of 20 degrees. Then the gears were connected to the metal hub. The gears were then connected to a permanent magnet that was used to generate the electricity. The magnet was coiled with 80 turns of copper wire (about ? inch) for generation of power. It was then spooled to a steel block which helped increase the voltage just like a transformer. Greased bushing was also set up between the two gears and the hub. The perforated cylindrical block was placed on both rods to serve as a heat sink. The second rod was bent at the tip to change cyclic motion to vertical motion to the magnet. Finally, the wind turbine was mounted on a 10 feet tall support above ground level and was observed. Discussion The wind turbine was observed to see how it can generate electricity or if it can. As the wind blew on the blades, they turned along with the shaft. The shaft was connected to the gears that were also connected to the permanent magnet. When the magnet moved, the volt meter needle deflected which meant it detected electric power from the wind turbine. The wind turbine was successfully set up and generated electricity. The process of converting wind energy into electric energy can be explained using some of the principles in physics: law of gravity, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, and momentum. While the whole setup depends on wind movements, other types of forces also affect the generation of electricity such as gravity and friction. Newtonââ¬â¢s first law of motion states that ââ¬Å"an object at rest will remain at rest while an object in motion will remain in motion. â⬠This is also called the Law of Inertia or the resistance of an object to change its state of motion. Mass, being the property of matter, is used to measure the amount of inertia. This mass also causes gravitational field; the bigger the mass, the stronger the field. Consequently, in the presence of another object of different mass, their gravitation forces affect one another, that is, they attract one another. Earth is an example and the assembled turbine fan is the other object. Since the fan has smaller mass than the earth, it tends to fall to the earth or that the earth pulls it down. The force of attraction between earth and gravity is computed as mass multiplied by acceleration due to gravity (Wfan = mg); the result of which is also the weight of the fan. This concept can be used to explain why the turbine fan turns when the wind blows on it. Aside from the streamlined design of the blades allowing smooth air flow, the ââ¬Ëpullââ¬â¢ force of gravity also helps the fan turn on its place or as long as it is mounted to the support. Next is electricity and magnetism. When the fan turned, the gears connected to the magnet also turned. We know from Hans Christian Orsted that electricity goes together with magnetism putting sense to the term electromagnetism. Electric wires do have magnetic properties and magnets also have electrical properties. This is can be shown in the wind turbine setup. The general principle in producing electricity using magnets and coils of wires is called electromagnetic induction. Faraday developed the law of electromagnetic induction stating that ââ¬Å"the induced electromotive force in a closed loop is directly proportional to the time rate of change of magnetic flux through the loop. We already know that magnetic flux is the measure of quantity of magnetism considering the strength and extent of the magnetic field. Thus, the magnetic field of the permanent magnet and the rotating motion generates electricity. This explains how kinetic energy from the wind is converted to electric energy. However, not all of the kinetic energy from the wind movement is converted to electric energy. In other terms, the kinetic energy is not conserved. This is basically due to friction. Friction is not a conservative force. By saying conservative, we mean it can be converted to other forms without losing portions of the original amount. An example is the gravitational force. Any object that falls from a certain height above the ground with initial potential energy (PE) converts all of it to kinetic energy (KE) as it reaches down the level. Same with when the object goes up. The original amount of KE is totally converted to PE. Friction does not behave this way. For example, the initial energy of a pusher pushing a box one meter away cannot regain the energy consumed even if the box is returned to its initial position. This is due to friction. What happened to the lost energy? They all go as heat energy, that is, wasted energy. In the wind turbine, change in the temperature is observable, especially in the gears and the rods. This is because they are all in contact while utilizing the wind power to move. Because of friction, the gears and the rods will heat up in the long run. It can damage the setup, starting from the parts with intense friction. In order to counter this, a heat sink has to be installed. Conclusion The wind turbine was successfully assembled and electricity was produced. The electric energy was converted from kinetic energy derived from the wind movement. When the blades turn, the rods connected to the mechanism turned and by magnetic induction, electricity was produced. Wind power is then a good source of kinetic energy needed for generating electricity. I suggest we put up wind turbines to harness the kinetic energy of the wind. It can help minimize the cost of power generation and we can also avoid the adverse environmental effects of using petroleum products.

Customer Relationship Marketing Essay
To understand CRM (Customer Relationship Marketing) in hotel industry (Millennium Seoul Hilton), and focus on the importance of loyalty guests who bring on most of organization profit by developing of guest recognition and rewards program. Introduction Background The growing realization that keeping the customers you have is as important as customer acquisition, has come about because of the cost involved in attracting new customers. This realization has evolved into understanding a customers lifetime values (F Buttle, 1996).à By doing this, you can be selective about who you try to keep as well as who you want to attract. Some scholars maintain that customer retention affects the bottom line. They further suggest that a 5% increase in customer retention would create a 125% increase in profit (F Buttle, 1996). Customer relationship management can be regarded as the art of employing rhetorical, experimental and personal information in order to personalize customersââ¬â¢ stay while creating incremental revenue opportunities (F Buttle, 1996). So for example, knowing that a customer had a less than memorable experience in the hotel provides the hotel manager with a chance to win them back the next time they are in town. Objectives By use of customer relationship management, the hotel can develop a comprehensive guest profiles for reservation information. This demonstrates to guests that the hotel is in touch with their needs.à It can also drive customer-centric data down to the transaction level, thereby allowing the workers and the guest-facing technology to deliver greater value to the customers (F Buttle, 1996).à Further, customer relationship management can create a realistic profile on the spending and stay patterns of the guests, thereby allowing the hotel to formulate guest-centric marketing for increased loyalty and spending (F Buttle, 1996). The idea of ââ¬Ëcherry pickingââ¬â¢ valuable clients and directing more resources to these clients has gained tremendous significance in the hotel industry.à Clients communication are such that account managers regularly network on the clients to ensure that they are happy in the way contracts are proceeding, and close relationship are build up. Therefore, my research objective is ââ¬Å"to understand the significance of customer relationship marketingâ⬠in hotel industry, with criteria as follows: â⬠¢ To examine customer relationship marketing. â⬠¢ To evaluate the importance of loyalty guests who brings on most of organization profits. â⬠¢ To illustrate the importance of developing of a guest recognition and reward programs in hotel industry. Aims This research paper will aim to identify and critically review the theories of customer relationship marketing in a hotel industry.à It will also aim to critically evaluate procedures of customer communication instruments used in the Millennium Seoul Hilton.à The paper will further examine the limitation of communication of customersââ¬â¢ relation tools used as well as providing the recommendation and acknowledging the advantages of employing these customer relationship marketing tools. Literature Review The main idea behind relationship marketing is to build a strong relationship with customers in order to retain them instead of concentrating efforts on recruiting new one.à There are various factors which influence customer retention. à They include high quality products in order to encourage repeat purchase and valuing customerââ¬â¢s needs with loyalty, which can be generated by excellent customer service (F Buttle, 1996).à Moreover, taking long-term marketing decisions for instance, continuous improvement or innovation to keep ahead of customerââ¬â¢s needs is important in retaining customers.à Further, frequent customers contact to establish their profiles in order to ensure accurate customer targeting of goods, services and information, can be of a great help in creating customer loyalty (F Buttle, 1996). For this dissertation, the main areas which need to be focused on are marketing process, situation analysis, marketing strategy, marketing mix decision, and implementation and control, whereby the works of many authors in these fields will be explored. Studies and researches which has been done by these authors brings great literature resources to the à importance of relationship marketing focus on customer, which constitutes customer relationship marketing, customer trust and commitment, customer loyalty as well as guest loyalty program approaches and general frame work for developing and managing a good customer base.à For example, there are literature studies and/or research made on hotels Intercontinental, Meritus Mandarin, Holiday Inn, and Norfolk hotel among others which allows this dissertation to represent the model group. This dissertation will be explored on the themes of the importance of customer relationship management as it affects customer loyalty by developing of guest recognition and rewards program.à Another important theme which will be investigated in the dissertation is how a hotel can utilize relationship marketing to retain its customers.à These main themes will be explored by use of works written by scholars and all that in the field of customer service and customer care. Methodology My dissertation will apply both qualitative and quantitative research methods.à A comprehensive literature review and depth interviews will be carried out as part of my quantitative research. For primary research, depth interview is selected for my study, as it focuses on hotel industry where emphasize should be placed on peopleââ¬â¢s values and attitudes.à Therefore, it is a good way to explore the importance of customer relationship management, and understanding the process of implementing strategies to build a strong customer base in a hotel industry. This would also bring more intensive understanding to my research, and the required respondent(s) should be specialists in customer relationship marketing in hotel industries.à à Moreover, surveys/questionnaires will also be carried out to understand the significance of customer relationship marketing in creating a strong customer base, according to different people from different background in todayââ¬â¢s world. A case study of Millennium Seoul Hilton will be researched. This is because it is a well known hotel by many travelers, and therefore will provide travelers and business customers for me to obtain different perception according to different backgrounds, age and gender. Moreover, the staff of the Millennium Seoul Hilton will also be part of sample populationà There will be four age groups that is 17ââ¬â26, 27ââ¬â 6, 39-46, and 47-56 with a total of 200 respondents. Secondary research data will be collected through different established resources, such as textbooks, journals, articles and internet in the way of literature review. This is because secondary research will validate my dissertation and support to justify my reasons and findings. Secondary data will be used first to conduct the research, before conducting primary research. This will be done because secondary data may contain information that is essential for conducting this research. Secondary research can allow collection of general information such as overview of Renaissance Seoul hotel, service to guests, guest room department, GRO for receiving VIPs, Marriot Rewards, Westin Chosun Hotel, and outlook of Intercontinental Hotel among others, which can be difficult and expensive to gather via primary research. Limitations The main practical difficult in this research will be the challenge to find the right person for depth interview.à In order to fulfill research objectives, the responder must be an individual who is a specialist in customer relationship marketing, specifically in the hospitality industry. This is because such individuals are familiar with the strategies, challenges and solutions which can help me go through my dissertation. However, such individuals have a higher reputation and usually have tight schedule and would be also be hard to each. Further, I am not familiar with specialists who are in the field of customer relationship management.à Another challenge is choosing Millennium Seoul Hilton as a place to conduct surveying and questionnaires.à This is because 200 sample is required to validate my research, and would be a great challenge to accomplish this myself due to concern of time, organizing and conducting this survey.à Moreover, it is also difficult to ask for help in conducting this research because the possibility in which I am able to hire few people to assist me will be costly. Additionally, individual who are asked may not be willing to respond according to the question asked, cooperates and/or even participate in this study.à Confidentiality issues for the respondents participating in the survey/questionnaire would be kept as anonymous due to Data Protection Act.à This is not required in this study. There are no specific ethical issues which need to be considered.à This is due to the fact that the survey/questionnaire is not targeting any groups and/or specific persons. Finding and Analysis The data which should be collected through survey/questionnaire for this research will be analysed and coded in SPSS system.à This is comprehensive statistical software that includes capabilities for data analysis, data management and programming (Malhotra N & Birks D, 2005).à Additionally, it enables analysists and researchers to uncover key facts, patterns and trends.à The interview would be assessed using analysis of verbal data, dividing the whole interview into section of main focused area along the answer from the respondents. The information collected through surveys/questionnaire will be used for descriptive purposes of identifying the relationship between customer relationship marketing and retention of customers according to age, gender and occupation, whereby correlation analysis and descriptive statistics would be utilized (Malhotra N & Birks D, 2005). Descriptive statistics is used to describe and summarize the basic features of data collection using a combination of techniques, such as graphical, tabular and summary (Malhotra N & Birks D, 2005).à In the findings of analyzed data through different analysis techniques, I would support my development of the dissertation.
